Do You Know Grand-Lieu? Winter is the biggest lake of ours. Summer, like an African daisy, winds around their forests of water lilies. But it is also an ornithological paradise, which shelters the most important colony of ash herons in the world. Thousands of birds live here, in this secret, hidden world. To capture a few fleeting moments, Erwan Balança spent several hundred hours on watch in this amazing place, jewel of nature.

Educational activities

 

From the Natural History Museum of Nantes to the Audubon marsh
From June 5 to December 31, 2004



The exhibition is presented as a chronological tour, retracing the most important stages in the life and the work of John-James Audubon.
In the exhibition area, classes will also have access to documentary support (books, multi-media terminals) which they can consult freely, to a projection of drawings, watercolours and engravings clarifying the artistic techniques used by John-James Audubon, and to a large chart where they can retrace the path of his adventures in an entertaining way.
Educational activities may continue at La Gerbetière and the Audubon marsh, where classes will be handled by a nature counsellor.
A teaching file is available for teachers.
Presentations of the exhibition are also proposed, in addition to their visit

Regional Natural Park of Brière
September, October, November, December 2004



In the framework of the Regional Natural Park of Brière – National Education partnership, the exhibitions entitled "wetlands" and/or "la Brière: a patrimony in heritage" will be open to local schools. At the same time, Park rangers will propose activities involving the discovery of local heritage through sketching and drawing nature (landscape, plants and animals, traditional activities) by establishing a link with Audubon’s work.

Discovering nature

Place where fresh water from the river mixes with salt water from the ocean, , the Loire estuary is presented as a mosaic of different milieus on the border of terra firma and water.

National Society for the Protection of Nature

Manager of the natural reserve of the lake of Grand-Lieu proposes two naturalist outings:
Tuesday, May 4 and Thursday, June 3, 2004 between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Accompanied by a guide from the SNPN, the public will discover the main observation sites of avifauna located on the periphery of Grand-Lieu lake where they may see rare species like the big egret, crab heron, or more simply ash or blue herons.

League for the Protection of the Birds
Loire-Atlantique delegation

"The history and life of storks in the Audubon marsh at Couëron". Bicycle tour, accompanied by a counsellor from the LPO 44.
Threatened in the 1970s, storks returned to the Loire estuary. For several years, platforms have been installed to accommodate them, especially particularly in the marshes at Couëron and Saint Etienne de Montluc. They are presently the subject of important studies on their migrations, which have become aleatory.

"Corncrake Night", LPO 44
The Corncrake is a discrete bird that is heard at night in the month of June. Volunteers and a counsellor from the LPO 44 will guide you through the Audubon marsh so you can hear this bird and discover the noises of the night world.
